Yuhang Rolling Lamp
Rolling lamp is a type of folk dance of Han nationality that is popular in towns along Qiantang River such as Yuhang and Haiyan etc. Rolling lamp has over 800 years of history. Bamboo pieces of about half centimeter thick are used to make large, medium and small bamboo balls. The large balls can be over 1 meter in diameter and weigh over 50 kg. In the center of the ball is another small ball with a burning candle. The small ball inside can be red or black. The ball with a red central ball is called “civil lamp” and the ball with a black central ball is called “martial lamp”. This folk culture that integrates sports and dance and combines strength and beauty is loved by local people. After efforts of folk artists and folk art workers for several generations, Yuhang rolling lamp gradually forms its own style that has both elegance of Jiangnan dance and strength of folk sports and acrobatics.
